Peter still wasnât giving up on taking Lisa to his parentâs home to meet them. He peered out the picture glass windows at Lisaâs garden. âMy mother has a rose garden, too. Maybe the two of you can swap ideas or something?â
Lisa mouth turned up with a slight mischievous twist. âWhat time were we to be at your parentâs house?â
Peter had never had to work so hard on a relationship before. Was that what made her so intriguing to him? To Pembrooke?
The idea that Pembrooke still wanted her, irked him though. Couldnât the guy take ânoâ for an answer? Then again, Peter realized, he couldnât take a ânoâ from her either. Sheâd hooked him every bit, and he didnât want her to let go of him, nor did he want to let go of her.
And yet, the baby food mystery still plagued him. When heâd mentioned it to James earlier that morning, all he did was laughed. Did James figure his younger brother was in for a real surprise?
Peter sipped his coffee as he considered Lisaâs hair pulled back in a ponytail. He wanted to free the golden strands held hostage and bury his face in them.
She sighed deeply as she took another bite of her donut, her breasts rising with the intake.
He cleared his throat. âIâll pick you up around half past five.â
âAll right. Iâll just have to call Hawk and cancel our engagement.â
He shook his head. She couldnât be serious.
She motioned to the living room. âWould you like to watch that movie again? Or did you need to get back to work?â
âI told James I was taking off this morning and wouldnât be back until after lunch.â
âWhat will Jenny think?â
âI told you. Sheâs out of a job as far as her match-making goes.â
âAnd your brother? What does he think of you gallivanting around after me when you should be hard at work?â Lisa grabbed up her coffee cup. âDid you need a refill?â
âSure. That half-and-half certainly makes the coffee smooth.â
âI know I shouldnât indulge myself so, but I really like the taste in my coffee.â
âAs far as your question about James, heâs amused. Says Iâm as good as married.â
She laughed. âHeâs got a cute sense of humor, too. So, whereâd he ever come up with a notion like that?â
âIt has something to do with my neglecting business for the sake of a woman, first time ever.â
âOooh, then Iâm a bad influence.â
âIâll say.â
Her brows rose as she considered his smile.
âReally bad,â he said, chuckling under his breath.
After they refilled their cups, they walked into the living room, and he restarted the movie.
When they curled up on the couch together, she snuggled against him. âTo think my hump-day morning could have turned out like this.â
He chuckled, the warmth of her body stirring his to the nth degree. âYeah, mine, too. Though I had a heck of a Tuesday also.â
Though the movie played in the background, Lisa didnât seem particularly interested in the story. Instead, she ran her fingers in a light touch over his chest, torturing him with the motion.
